4 Tips to Nail the Audition

If you want to make money from your guitar playing, you will more than likely need to audition somewhere at some point in your career.

These are my tips to nail the audition, and they’ve worked for me every time.

1 – Practise Extensively

The best tip I can give you is to practise extensively prior to the audition. If you can do 5 to 8 hours a day, I guarantee you that playing your instrument will be the least of your worries when the audition arrives.

Practise means focusing on what you don’t know. This may include learning new songs, theory etc.

This tip is best executed a few weeks prior to the audition, although your practise or working regimen should already be of similar proportions.

Some people, however, have other commitments and cannot allocate so much time to practise. If this is the case, you should practise as much as you can.

It’s also worth mentioning that if your muscles are not used to playing so often, you should slowly increase your practise time to accommodate them. The last thing you want is to stress your muscles prior to an audition.

2 – Health

You should exercise a healthy lifestyle prior to the audition. This includes:

  • A structured sleeping pattern;
  • Healthy and structured eating plans;
  • Exercise.

This will have many benefits for your mental and physical health prior to the audition.

In terms of exercise, 10 minutes a day is a great start.

3 – Vocals

The ability to sing will usually always count in your favor at an audition.

It means that additional money doesn’t need to be wasted on backup vocalists.

With that being said, a singing voice isn’t created over night, however a good place to start would be now. I recommend Gary Catona’s voice building exercises.

4 – Don’t Give Up

The requirements are usually very specific for an audition.

If you don’t fit the profile, it simply means that opportunity is not the correct fit for you.

Use the audition as an opportunity to learn from your mistakes and improve your craft.
