When it comes to micing a guitar amp, there are tons of options at your disposal. The 2 most common choices, however, can be narrowed down to the Shure SM57 and the Sennheiser E609. Both choices are relatively inexpensive (around $100 each), making them the preferred solution for live performances. Your personal choice of microphone comes to down to your own experiences and taste. Keep in mind, that usually when making a judgement you need to factor in the quality of the pre-amp that’s being used, as well as how the end result sounds in a mix and NOT on its own. Some people even like to combine both microphones in attempt to capture the best of both worlds. In my personal opinion, if you combine a good sound engineer with a good guitar player, almost any mic will do.
