U2 performed unannounced on a train platform in Grand Central Station in an effort to promote their upcoming North American tour.
Subway travellers were treated to an intimate session of some of their well-known hits, including “Angel of Harlem” and “Beautiful Day”. They also performed their brand new composition “Song for Someone”.
The band dressed up as street musicians and performed acoustic renditions of their material, while drummer Larry Mullen Jr. banged away on 5-gallon paint buckets. The typical buskers open guitar case was left on the floor as a tip jar.
Flocks of fans gathered around to sing along and document the experience. Footage from the event is expected to appear later today on “The Tonight Show”, as Jimmy Fallon was also spotted in the crowd.
